What Causes Cranial Deformities in Infants?
Cranial deformities in infants typically result from external pressure on the soft, rapidly growing skull. When babies consistently rest their heads in the same position due to sleep positioning, limited neck mobility, or even just preference, it can cause flattening on one side.
Other causes include congenital conditions like craniosynostosis, where skull plates fuse prematurely, affecting the natural growth and shape of the head. This condition requires medical evaluation and sometimes surgical intervention, as it differs from positional deformities and cannot be corrected with helmets alone.
Uses For Cranial Remolding Helmets
Every baby’s head is unique, and sometimes early growth brings challenges. Plagiocephaly
Plagiocephaly causes flattening on one side of the head. Cranial helmets applying targeted pressure to gently reshape the skull allowing the raised regions space to grow and re-balance.

Brachycephaly causes flattening at the back of the head and a wider skull shape. Cranial helmets guide growth forward and outward, helping to round the head.
Scaphocephaly
Scaphocephaly results in a long, narrow head shape. Cranial helmets encourage sideways growth, gently widening the skull to promote a more typical oval shape.
Postoperative Craniosynostosis
After craniosynostosis surgery, helmets support healing by protecting the skull and guiding balanced growth, helping achieve the most natural head shape possible.

How Does Rehab With A Cranial Helmet Work?
The helmet works by applying consistent, gentle pressure to inhibit further growth of prominent areas of the skull while allowing for growth and expansion in areas that are flattened. Our helmets are precision-made with a hard outer shell and soft lining for maximum comfort. At Applied Biomechanics we take care of the whole rehab process, from cranial scanning to the construction and fitting of your baby’s head shaping helmet.
How Long Does It Take?
We assess your baby’s progress over a period of 3-4 months, after which time we typically see improvements in head shape and are therefore able to remove the helmet.
How Many Hours a Day Does the Baby Wear the Helmet?
Your baby wears the remolding helmet for around 23 hours a day. The only time you remove the helmet is during and after a bath, as it’s important to keep it dry.
